I’m Laurie Gries, an Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in the Program for Writing and Rhetoric and the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado-Boulder.
Generally, my research centers on rhetoric, writing, and visual/material culture. I am particularly interested in forging connections between rhetoric, actor-network theory, and new materialism. My 2015 book, Still Life with Rhetoric, draws on a wide range of interdisciplinary scholarship and focuses on circulation, visual/material rhetorics, methodology, and history. To gain a sense of my scholarship, on the whole, you can read abstracts from select articles and chaptersA more formal sketch of my background, pursuits, and areas of focus is available in my curriculum vitae.

My graduate and undergraduate courses generally focus on writing, rhetoric, and
new media with a particular emphasis on theory and research. I have also been heavily involved with an interdisciplinary team working to strengthen research and teaching in the Digital Humanities. To become acquainted with my teaching, please explore links to my teaching philosophy and course overviews.
